Hebrew may have been spoken in the garden of Eden. Languages were divided at the tower of Babel. Eber was the ancestor of the Hebrews (Genesis 11:14-17). The English word "over" is derived from his name. The Hebrews passed over Jordan to enter the promied land. Aramaic appears in the Bible when Laban and Jacob have a peace feast. Laban calls the event "jegar sedutha" in Aramaic. Jacob calls it "Galeed", in Hebrew. Both mean "hill of witness". The two languages are related and have the same alphabet. Israel spoke Hebrew until carried into captivity by Babylon. Thereafter Aramaic was spoken until the coming of Jesus and the early church. Greek was spoken by foreigners as a trade language. Original Aramaic words were included when the New Testament was written.
